It wasn’t very long ago that when golfers wanted accurate yardage readings to the flag, they had very limited options. They would have to rely on either a yardage post on the fairway, a course guide, or consult a local caddie. However today there are so many options available, whether that is your GPS golf watch, mobile phone app, or a laser rangefinder – but which one is best to improve your game?
In this article we will do our best to guide you, we have reviewed the Callaway 300 Pro Laser Rangefinder, and if you keep reading, we will describe all of its features, benefits, and whether it is legal to use in a golf competition.
How Do Laser Rangefinders Work?
Golf rangefinders work by the golfer looking through a binocular scope and aiming the target on the screen at the flag, or other targets. According to Wikipedia the rangefinder then “operates on the time-of-flight principle by sending a laser pulse in a narrow beam towards the object and measuring the time taken by the pulse to be reflected off the target and returned to the sender.” This then provides an extremely accurate yardage reading helping you to select the right club for your next shot.
Callaway 300 Pro Laser Rangefinder – Features & Specifications
The Callaway 300 Pro Laser Rangefinder is mid-priced in the market, coming in at around $250 it’s not the cheapest, but it’s certainly not the most expensive. However, with its features and specifications, we found this a very good rangefinder. We also liked the grey and black color, and the red front really made it stand out.
In testing we especially liked the compact feel of the device, some cheaper models can feel quite large in your hand. The 300 Pro only weighs 5.4oz, which is very light. Now usually this might be a good thing, but sometimes the lighter the rangefinder is, the harder it can be to stabilize when aiming at your target. This might be a personal preference, but it is sometimes better to have a slightly heavier rangefinder. In comparison, the Bushnell V5 weighs 8oz, and the Garmin Approach weighs 7.8oz. This didn’t affect the performance in testing, but it is worth highlighting to help you make your decision.
This Callaway 300 Pro has all of the standard features you would expect in a laser rangefinder, such as 6x magnification and a strong magnet to easily attach the device to your golf cart. Some other features include:

The technology we especially liked was the PAT (Pin Acquisition Technology) and the Pulse Technology. These work to help you lock onto the flag or target when looking through the scope from up to 300 yards. In some budget models they can struggle to lock onto targets if there are trees behind the flag, but with the Callaway 300 Pro Laser Rangefinder the distances came back quickly and locked on with no issues at all.
The Callaway 300 Pro Laser Rangefinder has a slope function that helps you to accurately measure incline and decline towards a target. This is good if you are playing a hilly course. Although, be careful if you use this in a competition as the use of slope is illegal under the rules of golf.
“A device may not be used to measure other conditions such as wind speed or the slope of the ground.” Rule 14-3
However, as there is an on/off switch on the side of the rangefinder you are perfectly fine to use this in your next golf club competition with no worries of being disqualified.

We enjoyed testing out this Callaway 300 Pro Laser Rangefinder it was extremely accurate and in comparison to other more expensive models had no difference in the readings it gave us or the time it took to return a distance. The black carry case also looked very smart hanging on the side of my golf bag.

Simply use the Approach CT10 Sensors, which are available to purchase separately, and attach them to the end of your grips. The sensors will monitor and save every shot you play. Once you’ve played five rounds with the sensors the virtual caddie can then begin to use this data to suggest the ideal club selection or advice on the type of shot to play. What’s even more impressive is that it uses elevation, wind, and course layout to help choose the best club.

You can see from this list the large number of features included in this watch. When testing the Garmin Approach S62 some of the best features which we feel would make the biggest impact on your golf game are the PinPointer compass and the stat tracking feature.
The PinPointer compass shows the direction of the green when you can’t see it from your position on the course. This is particularly useful when you have a dog-leg hole or are aiming towards a sunken green that is out of view. The compass will accurately give you the correct line to aim towards.
Then on top of this, the stat tracking feature was really useful. There has been research into the benefits of tracking your performance on the course, such as the number of putts taken, and the number of fairways and greens in regulation hit. If you connect your watch to the Garmin Golf App you will be able to use this data to target the areas of your game for a more focused practice routine.
The S62 is a step up from previous models with a larger display screen, up to 20 hours of battery life in GPS mode, and interchangeable wristbands. We especially liked the touchscreen display which is also scratch resistant.
However, as mentioned earlier, this is more than a golf watch, it has amazing features for use away from the course. The S62 allows card payments through Garmin Pay, along with being able to receive messages through the smart notifications feature. You can also track your health and fitness through the running stepper tracker, it is even able to work as a heart monitor.
